I'm surrounded by geniuses

"Talent hits a target no one else can hit; Genius hits a target no one else can see."
-- Arthur Schopenhauer, German philosopher (1788 - 1860)

"In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts; they come back to us with a certain alienated majesty."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson, US essayist & poet (1803 - 1882)

There are days when I'm really glad I've read all my must-read blogs before I post to my own, and other days when I wish I had. I subscribe to Bloglines, which is a very handy way for me to keep track of everyone without having to go through each and every blog each and every day to see what's new - Bloglines does it for you. Some of you know about this already. The trouble with Bloglines is that sometimes the feeds don't come in right away, and I miss posts until the next morning, when I check the list again. When I read brilliance of the caliber I'm about to share with you, I don't always look to see when it was posted, so if you've seen these already, then I apologize. If you haven't, then I hope I've enriched your day a little.

Most of these are completely unrelated to a specific topic, but all of them spoke to me on some level - a resounding hear, hear! to the thoughtfulness that went into these essays. My brain is scattered in a thousand different directions today and I'm having focus issues, so I'm going to let these fine writers speak for me while I try to get my act together:

M.J. Rose, buzzing about ... well, buzzing.

Donna Andrews on down time.

Mary Anna Evans, on an issue I struggle with in my own writing. There is, of course, a much deeper undercurrent that we could get into on the den of iniquity our society has become, but on the surface I'll just say that in my mind, this is not justification, it's reality.

And finally, my twin sister JT Ellison on fawning in fangirldom. I do it all the time, too, JT.

Volleyball. For those of you I haven't spoken to since yesterday, it's because we didn't get home until somewhere around 10:30 last night. The Tall One and her team advanced to the championship round of the district tournament and then lost in four games (the last being a very tight one, 26-24) in the final match. They played well - my child was on fire (please excuse the proud mother moment) - and she made both the season All-District Team and the All-Tournament Team. She would've been the tournament MVP if they'd won (and I'm not just saying that - that came from both her coach and the coach of the team we defeated in the semis). The good news is, placing second still gets us into the Regional tournament, which starts next week.

Which means next week is going to be something similar to this one - only the kids will be back in school and I might actually get something accomplished.

Today I am going to sit on my child with every ounce of strength I can muster and get some college applications filled out. I'm not sure she understands the meaning of the word "deadline". Of course, she's planning to sleep until noon, which gives me time to work on the book. We have a new word meter:

Zokutou word meterZokutou word meter
82,857 / 90,000
(92.1%)

It's more spit and polish now, a little revamping of one of the plot lines which will make it stronger, and new chapters to fill in the holes. We're getting there.

The weekend. This is going to be another one of those weekends with little to do but get caught up on all the stuff I've been "meaning to do" for a while. I may not get as ambitious as Donna about cleaning out things, but some of those other things on her list as well as JT's pretty closely match mine - shorts, interviews, reading a few books. As you can see from the Reading Room list, I'm way behind on my New Year's resolution. Still, it's just October, and there are more on the list than I really thought there would be.

Now, if I could just get caught up on everything else. One day at a time, Mama, one day at a time.

Have a great weekend. Read a book. Enjoy the changing season. Which reminds me, I gotta go check the leaf cam.

=) JB

Someone should kidnap you and take you away from this hectic life of yours. Just reading about it wears me OUT! Miss you girl! Max and Maggie say HI!

Some great links here. Is JT really your twin sister?

GP - miss you, too, girlfriend! Thanks for stopping by.

Patry - JT and I tell everyone we're twins separated at birth by two years (I'm older). We're not related by blood but we might as well be because of how very much alike we are. Likewise, Brett Battles is our long-lost triplet brother - there are just too many similarities among the three of us to not claim each other! We've also adopted Sandra Ruttan as our little sister - we call each other the Literary Siblings. It's great to have like-minded friends to share all this craziness of being a writer with, you know?
