Another Milestone

The Boy turned 16 yesterday. Ah, me.

It's hard to believe that this lanky, long-haired young man was once a tiny, squirming, screaming bundle of joy. I asked him this morning if he could guess what I was doing on this day 16 years ago. It took him a minute. In fact, it was only when I said, "I was in the hospital" that he got it. Oh, he said. 16 years ago.

Uh ... yeah.

The WGH and I did a good job of surprising him with a couple things. I baked him a cake - German chocolate with coconut pecan icing, his favorite - and scouted around the Internet until I found a game store that carried the RPG video game he wanted. His sister said it sounded like a fire alarm going off when he opened it (his exclamation of glee, that is). We also surreptitiously invited his two buddies over for dinner, so it was a right little party. It was the WGH's idea to do something, and my six phone calls and one trip to the grocery that made it happen. We make a pretty good team.

The next "big deal" for me is going to be when Little Bit officially hits the teenage years - which will be in April. Lord, help me.

The Tall One got another college acceptance yesterday (we're now up to two). Not a letter. A phone call. And not a scholarship offer, but at least the call was from the college she's most interested in going to at this point. The WGH and I are still keeping our fingers crossed. We figure if God means for it to happen, it will happen.

I have great plans for today. Lots of things on the to-do list - and I hope to get most if not all of them accomplished - including finishing the synopsis on the new book, contacting a few of the terrific folks I met this weekend regarding their Lunch Room interviews, getting another review written, and finishing this week's book (Bride and Doom by Deborah Donnelly). But first, I have a conference call/online training session for the day job.

And the kids wonder what I do all day.

Read a book. It's good for you!

=) JB
